“Sailor Jerry” is an infamous figure in the history of tattooing in america. When he first started, he would hop on trains from state to state, and sail to Japan and Hawaii to learn the skilled art. He’s also known for mentoring Don Ed Hardy (sound familiar?), Cliff Raven and Mike Malone – who described Sailor Jerry as a “Class-A Pirate.” Oh yeah… We love pirates, too.

LeftRight will be there in full force. If you end up coming out, feel free to come up and say “Ahoy” for some free swag and high-fives. We’ll be the ones wearing jeans, covered in tattoos.

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. Considered by many the foremost tattoo artist of all time, Collins is the father of modern day tattooing, whose uncompromising lifestyle and larger than life persona made him an American legend. Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon.

Taken from BlueScholars.com:

People ask me why I care about making a mix of Hawaiian tunes. I tell them that it’s because Iʼm from Seattle.

I donʼt think I can apply the word ‘foreign’ to any cultural elements that have influenced me in becoming the person I am today.

Through years of, um, ‘nourishment’ from grinds, to listening to Jawaiian tunes as a teenager, to starting a group with a military kid from Honolulu, to learning the meaning of ‘false crack’ the hard way (ha!)… the spirit of Hawaii has long maintained a notable presence in my life.

And while Iʼm not Hawaiian, nor do I claim to be a local boy, I acknowledge and am thankful for the role that the Islands have played in the development of my cultural identity.

For me, a big part of the OOF! EP project was to experiment with a new way of identifying who we are and where we come from. It was an exercise in global cultural expression. Perhaps this is the age we can start believing that ‘where we are from’ is anywhere that has influenced us in becoming who we are. And perhaps our brothers and sisters are simply those who want to share this belief with us.

Watch out tho. When you embrace this idea, you start to think that home can be everywhere and your people could be everyone.

New People comin thru, son!

Respect to In4mation for the nifty ‘OOF!’ logo they designed and lent us, respect to Ohana for engineering the delicious shrimp tempura + diced spicy scallop + krab + masago sushi that they’ve dubbed the ‘69 Roll,’ and respect to you for reading this and listening to these tunes.

Mahalo.

saba / sabzi

Download the mix HERE or click the image up top.

And make sure to purchase the new Blue Scholars EP: OOF! available on iTunes NOW!

We just recently wrapped up a *brand project for a company called Marination and it is with great pride and a hungry stomach that we watch as they hit the streets tomorrow for their official launch. I’ll let them describe what it is they do and why you NEED to hit them up:

Marination specializes in Hawaiian and Korean curb cuisine that is always fast, usually marinated in a signature sauce, frequently served in a tortilla, and mostly healthy. Our rolling street kitchen is a righteous destination for carnivores and vegetarians alike.

Check them out at marinationmobile.com, follow them on Twitter, read their blog, eat their food. It’s only a matter of time before they blow up so get in on the ground floor and get in the know. Tell your friends…they will thank you.

*We will be updating the site soon with some new work coming out of LR, to include the Marination stuff…so stay tuned.

Being huge snowboarders ourselves, LeftRight gets super excited when a company releases a film with footage in the Northwest. This film from Wild Card Studios features some rad riders getting down on Mt. Baker and Steven’s Pass to name a few. This is slated for release in September 2009 in high-definition. Wow.

On top of that, the story line is awesome, too. Here’s an excerpt:

…It’s 2012, and the economy has crashed completely. The snowboarding industry is non-existent, and Washington is brought back to the times of the wild west. Outlaws and renegades struggle to survive.
In the Pacific northwest there is a small band of riders who’s passion for riding and filming still fuels there will to live, and there is a bounty out to collect footage of these outlaws. But bounty filmers are few and far between, and the competition to film is deadly. Watch the riders push there skills to new levels, in a quest to film a video part. It won’t be easy, as their is more to filming now than just riding. They must face each other in fierce competition for a filmer, and end up in a unforeseen twist of fate…….this is “How The Northwest Was One!”

Can’t wait!
